Once upon a time in America there was a tree and there was a man
with a chain saw. Now granted that may not sound to unusual but in
this case the tree not only lived through the encounter but became
the envy of all the other trees. For the tree had become art!
"Living Art" by Clyde Daugherty.
Clyde began creating these living sculptures in 1995. Since that time he has carved nearly 600 trees in nine states. Clyde carves in live trees, stumps and logs. When he carves a live tree it is not harmed. This is because he is careful not to remove the bark all the way around so that the sap flow is not cut off. When Clyde began working on trees he only carved the face of an old bearded man, his "Tree Spirit". Although the Tree Spirit is still his most popular design he now does a variety of faces including indians, girls and old time sailors. Clyde begins each carving by doing a rough outline with a chainsaw. He does the details with chisels. It is the detail work that really brings the carving to life, especially when the eyes are done. When the carving is finished Clyde treats it with wood sealer to protect it from decay. At this point Clyde's work carving the tree is done, but the art is not finished. As the tree grows the image will age and change. Like people, the older the carving gets the more character it acquires. But unlike people, as it ages it doesn't require a great deal of maintenance. All that is needed is a yearly coating of wood sealer.
