Clyde's tree carvings are one of the most fascinating and unique aspects of his art and we at TheGreenman.com are especially proud to be able to share them with you. The image on the left is one of his "tree spirits" carved into a cherry tree being appreciated by a White Breasted Nuthatch. You can view more of his designs in the image galleries. Below you can also find information on how to have Clyde come do a tree carving of your own.

Carvings in Progress

Once upon a time in America there was a tree and there was a man with a chain saw. Now granted that may not sound to unusual but in this case the tree not only lived through the encounter but became the envy of all the other trees. For the tree had become art! "Living Art" by Clyde Daugherty.

Clyde began creating these living sculptures in 1995. Since that time he has carved nearly 600 trees in nine states. Clyde carves in live trees, stumps and logs. When he carves a live tree it is not harmed. This is because he is careful not to remove the bark all the way around so that the sap flow is not cut off. When Clyde began working on trees he only carved the face of an old bearded man, his "Tree Spirit". Although the Tree Spirit is still his most popular design he now does a variety of faces including indians, girls and old time sailors.

Clyde begins each carving by doing a rough outline with a chainsaw. He does the details with chisels. It is the detail work that really brings the carving to life, especially when the eyes are done. When the carving is finished Clyde treats it with wood sealer to protect it from decay. At this point Clyde's work carving the tree is done, but the art is not finished. As the tree grows the image will age and change. Like people, the older the carving gets the more character it acquires. But unlike people, as it ages it doesn't require a great deal of maintenance. All that is needed is a yearly coating of wood sealer.

How To Get A Tree Carved

To have Clyde carve one or more of your trees the first thing to do is contact him by phone or email and provide the following:
  • Contact information: please include your phone number and times of day that you can be contacted. Or if you prefer just specify that you want all contact to be through email.
  • Location: The location of the tree. Clyde's normal area is western Pennsylvania and northeast Ohio. He will travel outside of this range but it can increase the cost.
  • Tree Type: The type of tree does not matter. Clyde has carved just about every type including apple, maple, oak, elm, pine and willow.
  • Tree Size: The size of the tree DOES matter if the tree is alive. The minimum size of a live tree is one with about a 14" diameter. If you measure around the trunk that will be about 44". The reason Clyde will not carve anything smaller than this is so the bark does not close over the carving as the tree grows. For stumps and logs Clyde will carve almost anything.
  • When: If you have a time frame in mind please include it. Depending on the time of year Clyde may have a waiting list or he may be busy doing shows. The sooner you contact Clyde to schedule a tree to be carved the better.
  • Design: If you already have a design in mind please include it. If you have not picked a design yet that is okay, you can still schedule your tree and pick a design later. Remember that Clyde only carves faces.
